NUMBNESS IN HANDS: IS IT A SIGN OF SERIOUS MEDICAL CONDITION?

NUMBNESS IN HANDS: IS IT A SIGN OF SERIOUS MEDICAL CONDITION?

1. From a TCM’s point of view, what are the triggers of numbness or a tingling / stabbing sensation in the hands?

Triggers of numbness or tingling sensation in the hands could arise from a sudden attack of the wind pathogen on our meridians (风邪入络), or due to an insufficient flow of Qi and Blood (气血不足) in our body’s meridians to the location due to a weak body constitution or the initial recovery from an illness.  It could also be due to a blockage of the flow of Qi and Blood (气滞不通) in meridians leading to the area, such as the brain, neck, shoulders, upper limbs etc.  When the nearby body parts such as neck, shoulders, upper limbs or hands suffer from the cold pathogens, it would also result in the blocked flow of Qi and Blood (寒凝经络).  This prolonged duration of blockage could result in the formation of blood statis (气滞血瘀 / 寒凝血瘀) which is mostly presented by the stabbing sensation in the hands and/or fingers.  Other medical conditions such as diabetes, tendonlitis, carpel tunnel syndrome, gout, coronary diseases, and chronic alcoholic intoxication are other possible triggers.

2. Are there any steps that can be taken to reduce your risk of developing these issues?

It is essential to keep our bodies warm and away from the external pathogens of wind and cold.  Ensure proper Qi and Blood circulation through a well and nutritious diet coupled with a healthy and active lifestyle.  Give any symptoms exhibited by your body early medical attention.  Perform simple and regular massages to selected acupoints such as Qu Chi (曲池穴), Nei Guan (内关穴), He Gu (合谷穴), Nei Lao Gong (内劳宫穴), Shi Xuan (十宣穴) and Ba Xie (八邪穴) to leave unnecessary tensions along the forearms and prevent the formation of any blockages within the meridians.
